Online Video Watching - Consumption and Habits

After all the talk of Video Consumption, movie downloads, movie streaming on mobile phones – I’ve suddenly started researching quite a bit about Online Behaviour when it comes to watching videos on the internet.

Came across this report on the AlphaMarketer blog:
'According to a SurveyU study, which compares its results with the Pew Internet/American Life Project’s online video study, there's a huge difference between the online video habits of college students and adult internet users.'

Only 57 percent of Adult Web surfers have watched online video and only 19 percent might download video content. Whereas 93 percent of college students in the US have viewed Web video and up to 62 percent of students might download video content.

Usage Patterns:

“The line between creator and consumer is blurring for the Millennial generation,” said Dan Coates, cofounder of SurveyU. “When it comes to online video, college students have advanced beyond the rest of the internet population and are fully engaged in the complete online video lifecycle: downloading videos, rating content, posting comments, publishing video links and uploading their own videos.”

Another difference - Video quality is not as much of a concern to college students as compared to their counterparts.

What do People Watch Online?

Indian Insight:

The Twenty20 World Cup is on and as we all know – Cricket is huge in our country! I started off a blog for the tournament and it’s actually been interesting going through the traffic statistics.

Posts which have videos embedded in them obviously record the most time spent by users, but they also have the least bounce rate*. These pages also record the least Text Ad clicks, thereby stressing on the importance of Video Ads for monetizing video content.

Porn, Bollywood content and Cricket would probably account for nearly 85% of the ‘Types of Online Video Watched’ in India. Perhaps even more!

*Bounce Rate – When the visitor leaves your site from the entry page itself it is considered as a bounce.
