TONY EASTLEY: Anti-austerity protests in Greece have turned ugly with violent clashes between demonstrators and police. Cheap Red Wing Shoes A 48-hour general strike has paralysed most of the country's transport system and caused widespread power cuts. If a deal to cut the deficit by $40 billion isn't reached within the next 24 hours the European Union has warned the Greek government that there's no plan B and Greece will simply fall into bankruptcy. Europe correspondent Emma Alberici spent the day in Athens in and around Syntagma Square, the centre of the demonstrations. Red Wing Boots EMMA ALBERICI: Protesters began hurling abuse at the police officers guarding the parliament, demanding that as public servants they too should be demonstrating against the $40 billion worth of government spending cuts and 150,000 job losses. As tempers flared anarchists pulled out picks and axes and began hacking off pieces of marble from Syntagma Square and hurling them at riot police. Red Wing Work Shoes Canisters of tear gas were fired into the crowds but to little effect. They'd come prepared with masks. A van belonging to the Greek public broadcaster ERT was set ablaze and symbols of capitalism, the McDonald's store and five-star hotels, were targeted and damaged. Before things turned ugly the scene was peaceful and the people's fury more clearly directed at the MPs who they say caused the economic chaos. Ken Griffey Jr Shoes The fury on the streets here is directed at the 300 MPs who are currently in the parliament there debating whether or not they should inflict another round of austerity measures on the people of Greece. Tax hikes, sell-off of public assets and a slashing of the public sector - something like 150,000 jobs to go among the civil servants.
